Appreciating other people’s wants, needs, differences, beliefs, customs, and heritage.

"I had never cared about acceptance as much as I cared about respect." -  Jackie Robinson

"I believe in courtesy. It is the way we avoid hurting people’s feelings." - E.L. Konigsburg, said by Mrs. Olinski, The View From Saturday

             This means:

Trophy   Saying please and thank you.
Trophy   Listening when someone is talking.
Trophy   Returning what you borrow.
Trophy   Offering and accepting kind words and constructive criticism.
Trophy   Not using foul language.
Trophy   Refraining from negative comments.

    Suggested Activities:

1.   Community Service Project:  Research recent newspapers and magazines to find an article about how a company or factory demonstrates respect for the environment.  Make a certificate to honor this company and send it to the company president or factory manager.
2.

Brainstorm the ways society, families, or individuals can foster more respectful behavior in order to prevent negative and undesirable situations.

3.   Make a mural on a bulletin board with classmates of photos or pictures of each of you. Write captions for the pictures to illuminate your suggested title. For example: Wouldn’t life be boring if we were all the same? Sign up for the digital camera!
4.   Examine the role of etiquette in sports.  What types of actions or behaviors make a good/bad sport?  How do players, officials, fans treat each other?
5.   Learn about netiquette (Etiquette on the Internet).  It is important for everyone to use good online manners.  Example: USING ALL CAPITAL LETTERS IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING.     Write a netiquette brochure for your school.  Check out these netiquette web sites:

(Type "Netiquette" in the Search box)

6.   Read The Christmas Menorahs by Janice Cohn .  This true story is sure to bring solid class discussion on demonstrating respect toward others.
7.

Discussions questions:

-  What is the effect of treating others with respect?

- How can you show respect toward people who are paid to serve you, such as the server at a fast food restaurant?

-  Why is it important to be respectful to elderly people?

-  Think of three people you know and respect.  What character traits lead you to respect them?

-  Do your room and closet look like you respect your clothes and other possessions?

-  By putting effort into your school work are you showing respect for yourself?

8.   Writing activity Make a list of disrespectful words and phrases you have said to yourself or others.  Do you put yourself down when you’ve done something wrong?  When you finish making this list, crumple it up as tight as it can go to lock all the words inside.  Have a basketball shoot-out with the class using the trash can.  Vow never to use those words again.
9.   Buzz words:  Self-respect, Manners, Courtesy, Assertiveness, Tolerance, Politeness.
